The Maori Party is opposed to the Children, Young Persons, and Their Families (Oranga Tamariki) Legislation Bill because it reduces the rights of whānau, hapū and iwi to participate in decisions over their tamariki.
There are calls from around the motu, including from Dame Tariana Turia, Te Roopu o te Ora, the Iwi Leaders Group and Te Pūtahitanga to respond to concerns about the changes proposed in the Bill and the implications this legislation will have for whānau, hapu and iwi.
The Social Services Committee is currently seeking submissions on the Bill.
Submissions to the Social Services Select Committee on the Children, Young Persons, and Their Families (Oranga Tamariki) Legislation Bill are due by 3 March 2017.
The Māori Party encourages you to make submissions to the Select Committee before the due date.
An example of a submission on the Bill and a guide to making submissions can be found below.
