Of Waikato Tainui descent, Tuku was raised by his grandparents at Waahi Pa in Huntly. He is married with three children and seven grandchildren.
He is a member on Waikato-Tainui’s tribal executive, Te Arataura and is the Kahui Ariki representative for the Head of Kiingitanga, King Tuheitia.
Tuku is also a director on Tainui Group Holdings – the tribe’s commercial arm and is Co-Chair of the Waikato River Authority.
He has had a wide-ranging and diverse career from being a secondary school teacher, TV news reporter to treaty settlement negotiator and tribal leader. From 1996 to 1999 he served as a member of parliament for the Maori Electorate of Te Tai Hauaruru.
Tuku believes the power of our independent political voice can only be achieved by uniting under the Maori Party.
