Of Waikato Tainui descent, Tuku was raised by his grandparents at Waahi Pa in Huntly. He is married with three children and seven grandchildren.

He is a member on Waikato-Tainui’s tribal executive, Te Arataura and is the Kahui Ariki representative for the Head of Kiingitanga, King Tuheitia.

Tuku is also a director on Tainui Group Holdings – the tribe’s commercial arm and is Co-Chair of the Waikato River Authority.

He has had a wide-ranging and diverse career from being a secondary school teacher, TV news reporter to treaty settlement negotiator and tribal leader. From 1996 to 1999 he served as a member of parliament for the Maori Electorate of Te Tai Hauaruru.

Tuku believes the power of our independent political voice can only be achieved by uniting under the Maori Party.

“Ki te kotahi te kakaho ka whati, ki te kaapuia e kore e whati.”
