Budget 2017: Whānau-approach to tackle family violence

The success of Whānau Ora navigators is behind a plan to bring in whānau-centred facilitators to help address family violence, says Māori Party co-leader Marama Fox.

"The Whānau Ora approach is getting results and helping whānau achieve. We want to replicate that success to help whānau break the cycle of family violence," says Ms Fox.

The Ngā Wawaoanga Tūkino ā Whānau pilot will be funded to the tune of $9 million over four years to come at the problem from a different angle to that of the court system.

"No matter if the whānau are victims or perpetrators, by putting the family to the forefront in a kaupapa Maori approach, we can achieve better outcomes," says party co-leader Te Ururoa Flavell.

“Whānau need assistance to get the right help available, and the facilitators will be providing that vital support.”
