Te Mātāwai first hui – a milestone for te reo Māori
Māori Development Minister Te Ururoa Flavell said today’s first meeting of Te Mātāwai signals the dawn of a new era for te reo Māori – New Zealand’s indigenous language.
Te Mātāwai, the new organisation established by Te Ture mō te Reo Māori 2016 to lead Māori language revitalisation on behalf of iwi and Māori, is meeting for the first time at Te Wānanga o Raukawa in Ōtaki.

On the eve of World Suicide Prevention Day, the Māori Party is pleased to see that a number of communities are accessing funds it secured for Māori youth suicide prevention.
“We feel the pain of whānau and communities who’ve been ripped apart from suicide and we applaud those who’ve put their hand up to do all they can so others don’t suffer the same dilemma,” said Māori Party co-leader Marama Fox.

Māori Party advances fight against tobacco
The passing of new smokefree legislation is another step toward the Māori Party’s plan to save more lives and advance its fight on the “peddlers of death.”
“Tobacco smoking kills more than 5000 New Zealanders a year. And it is one of the biggest killers of the Māori people, so we’re happy that another law, motivated by our lobbying of the Government, has been introduced to help combat the negative impact tobacco smoking is having on our nation,” said Māori Party co-leader Marama Fox.
